How To Replace Windshield Wipers

Posted on: September 13, 2011

One questions that why we always forget to change our windshield wipers. One knows that they are needed and they are not expensive. One knows that it is easy to install new wipers although the windshield still has those worn out and useless strips of rubber.

A time always comes that makes us remember to change our windscreen wipers – when it starts raining. That is unfortunately the worst time to handle a pretty easy job. It is better to spare a short ten minutes time outside in the sunny weather and replace the windshield wipers. Following are the easy steps which can be followed.

Removing the old wipers

The very first step for replacing the windshield wipers is to get the old rundown wipers off the car. One should be careful while removing them because the wiper’s arm is made up of metal and the windshield is glass. Any clumsy move can scratch or crack the windshield that would not be good.
For removing the old wiper, the entire assembly has to be pulled away entirely from the windshield. It will get propped by itself in the raised position. One hand should be used to hold the wiper arm while the other hand has to be used for depressing the small tab on the underside of the wiper where it is connected to the metal arm. When the tab is depressed, the wiper can slide off the arm by just pulling the center toward the bottom of the wiper’s arm.

Safety Step: Be careful not to crack the windshield!

The arms of the metal windshield wiper are spring loaded for holding the wipers to keep the wipers pressed to the windshield during a stormy weather. This unfortunately means that without the soft wiper on the end, that metal arm can be a cause of some serious damage for the windshield.
The wiper arm should be prevented from snapping back and hitting the windshield by resting it carefully against the windshield while the new wipers are getting ready to be installed. Even if they are just grabbed by turning around, one should make it safe and park the arm in the down position.

Lining everything up

It can be a little scary to look at the empty wiper arm and the new wiper especially at the attachment point. It will not be easy to picture how it all goes back together. The method for getting it done quickly and easily is to line everything up before one starts to click it all into place.
•    While looking at the side of the wiper which attaches it to the metal arm, there is one end of the plastic clip which is flat and the other has a curve across the top. The plastic clip has to be rotated until this curve points toward the wiper blade.

•    The wiper should now be held upside down next to the metal wiper arm. It can be seen that the curve in the hook shaped arm matches with the curved top of the plastic clip.

Clicking the new wipers into place
Now when everything has been lined up, it can be put all together. There is also a trick to this part.

•    When everything is lined up, the wiper has to be lowered over the wiper arm, the arm has to be placed between the sides of the wiper and the open end of the hook should face the plastic clip.

•    The hook has to be moved over the plastic clip, and then the wiper should be pulled upward so that the rounded edge of the clip will slide into the hook.

•    It should be tightly pulled so that the assembly will click into place.

•    The wiper should be carefully lowered back to the windshield.

•    The same whole process is to be repeated for the other wiper and the work is done.
